Joe Biel

In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, I wanted to make a shoutout to someone who inspired me to accept who I am and know that a disability should not negatively define me: Joe Biel. In the world of Autism avocation, the debate over whether autism is a disease or a developmental idiosyncrasy has created an emerging split between autism advocacy nonprofits. Machine Gun Kelly

More commonly known as his stage name of Machine Gun Kelly, Colson Baker has always stayed pretty candid with his media appearance. It came as a shock to fans when he posted on his social media accounts this January that he had not been in a very good place recently, especially when all the music he had just put out had been so well received. The making of the music was apparently a big part of both his “downfall” (or what he expected it to be when he titled the album “Tickets to My Downfall”) and his healing.

Binge eating, whether it be through bagels, corn chips, popcorn, or plain brown sugar has plagued my existence. It plagues my family too. My dad struggles with binge-eating, my grandma struggles with binge-eating, and my great-grandma struggled with binge-eating; it’s generational. It wasn’t until the pandemic, when I had gained 20 pounds, that I decided I needed to change my eating habits. Like many child stars, Chloe, who is currently 22 years old, has grown up in the public eye and was further pushed into the spotlight once her sister and herself signed on to Beyonce’s record label and had cameo roles in the superstar’s visual album, Lemonade. But, as is often the case, doing what one loves and doing it well is not a shield from the criticisms of the ever-watching public, especially given the access into anyone’s life social media provides.

Accessibility should not be understated in Mental Health. While academic historians abhor it, pop history serves its purpose of sparking people’s interest in history, in turn influencing future history majors such as myself. The same can be applied to mental health, but while academic historians stay far away from pop history, therapists and researchers have just recently begun (within the past 5 years or so) to adopt it into their work. Enter Stage right, Anna Akana. Akana is one of those people who inspired me to learn more about myself and continues to inspire hundreds of thousands of people every time she uploads new content.
